Printer Setup for GlobalEdge (Standard and Generic)

Standard and Generic Text Only Printer setup in GlobalEdge

Printing to local printers from GlobalEdge can be challenging if the drivers for the specific printer do not exist in the remote desktop. There are several different methods for installing printers.

Setting Up a Standard Printer for Use with GlobalEdge

A standard printer is one that prints standard 8.5" x 11" documents. If you are trying to setup a barcode or receipt printer, you may follow these steps, but if you encounter printing issues, you may need to install these types of printers as Generic Text Only Printers (see next section).
  • Connect the printer to your local computer. Start by connecting the printer to your local computer. Allow Windows to install all drivers automatically or follow the setup instructions provided by the manufacturer to install the necessary drivers.
  • Print a test page from your local computer. Before attempting to print from GlobalEdge, print a test page from your local computer. Search for "Printers & Scanners", select the printer, select "Print test page". If your printer successfully prints, you may proceed to GlobalEdge.
  • Print test page from GlobalEdge. If you're setting up a standard printer to print reports (not barcodes or receipts), navigate to a Service Order or Invoice and select F11 Send To, select To Print and then select the double arrow for Printer Settings. In the Printer field, select the Printer you just added and select F8-Ok. This printer will be the default from this point forward.

Generic Text Only Printers

Barcode labels and receipt printers are typically setup as "Generic Text Only Printers". This requirement exists simply because of the printer drivers needed and the fact that we're sending print commands from a remote computer to a local printer.

Before proceeding to setup a generic text only printer, try to print a barcode or receipt from GE by going to Inventory Management > 4 Inv Periodic Processing Menu > 10 Print Barcode (One Item). If the printer shows as an option, attempt a test print. If the printer prints but the format is wrong, you will need to proceed to setup the printer as a generic text only printer.

Follow these steps to setup a Generic Text Ony Print

  • Search your local computer for "Printers & Scanners"
  • Select "Add Device". Even if you locate the printer, do not select "Add Device" next to the printer, select "Add Manually"

  • Select "Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings" and select Next.

  • Choose the printer port with the printer attached. This step can be the most confusing. Sometimes it is easy to locate the printer. If most of the ports on your local computer have been used, you may see WSD or other virtual ports. You may nee to lool for the device ID to identify which port the printer is using. Select the port and select Next.

  • Regardless of the actual manufacturer, select "Generic" and select "Generic / Text Only" as the Printer then select Next.

  • Type a printer name that will allow you to recognize the printer and select Next. If your printer has already been setup using the standard method, you will need to change the name slightly so you can differentiate when printing from GE.

Now test your printer from GE again. Notify your GE administrators if you are unable to connect your printer.

Please note that the format of the barcode or receipt must be selected within GE's system setup settings. You cannot modify the format in the printer settings. Please consult with your GE administrator.
